I could not resist the new issue of Cosmopolitan with Dakota Fanning on the cover. It's pink, campy, vaguely disturbing, and a nice throwback to their Scavullo-era covers. It's the sort of jailbait ephemera that I want to find in a box 20 years from now, along with my 80's Brooke Shields magazines and much-loved VHS copy of Poison Ivy. Watching a former child star become sexualized is always mildly unsettling, even when they are of an appropriate age. Dakota turned 18 this month but it still feels wrong to see her next to the "His Best Sex Ever" cover line. I actually read that article, it was sooooooo boring. I'm convinced that no one on the Cosmo editorial team has sex. If they did, they wouldn't relentlessly promote chocolate body frosting. The magazine as a whole is so dumbed-down and misguided that it's actually a pretty entertaining read, like The National Enquirer and tabloids with cover stories about Shiloh Jolie-Pitt's gender "confusion" (see this week's Life & Style). Totally the best $3.99 I've spent in ages.

I totally dig Steven Meisel's new Balenciaga campaign. It's a (surprisingly literal) homage to Judy Linn's early portraits of Patti Smith, which were recently compiled into an excellent book. Most people seem to think that these ads aren't aspirational enough but I totally prefer a disheveled, somewhat anemic looking andro chick to an overly-photoshopped Balenciaga android. And the interiors are so perfect.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is watching The McLaughlin Group's year-end special with my family on Christmas morning. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the program, it's one of those long-running PBS news shows where various pundits argue about politics. John McLaughlin is the moderator and I love him because every single Christmas, without fail, he wears the same plaid blazer. When I was a child the blazer looked more tailored (he's gotten a bit smaller over the years) but I totally prefer the oversized look—it's just so Heathers! I hope he wears this thing for another 20+ years.

I finally located a copy of Garage magazine (named for editor-in-chief Dasha Zhukova's gallery of the same name) and holy shit it is amazing! Most magazines that attempt to bridge the gap between art and fashion are annoying, especially this one. But Garage feels different. There aren't celebrities plastered on every page. The articles are actually worth reading. And Nick Knight's Cafe Flesh-inspired editorial is my favorite of the year. Believe it or not, but that human Blythe doll is actually Lily Donaldson. I was walking down fifth avenue recently and I spotted a girl that bore a strong physical resemblance to a pre-op Heidi Montag. She was wearing a teal crop top with a dreamcatcher on it, leggings, and knee-length Minnetonka boots with about a million tiers of suede fringe. The utterly unfortunate trend of Native American cultural appropriation in fashion had officially gone from being purely tasteless to utterly grotesque. I hope that Forever 21 & co. stop churning out "Navajo" waterfall cardigans and jeggings. We saw The Raincoats, took a road trip to Atlantic City, and watched the hysterical "Rock Star Daughters" episode of Politically Incorrect. Bijou Phillips (daughter of John Phillips) is so high, it's unbelievable. I feel bad making light of it because I read Mackenzie Phillips' memoir—so good—and it's safe to say that Bijou's childhood was a drug-fueled nightmare. But she's so entertaining and likable, not to mention way cooler than Sally Taylor (daughter of James Taylor and Carly Simon) who annoys me to no end. Big thanks to Lauren for sending me this!

I just about died when I came across the concept art for the Pastoral Symphony segment of Fantasia. It's just so magical! If I was Oprah rich I would commission a 50-ft mural of this painting, it would look so great next to my infinity pool. And I'd also give Tim Walker 300 million dollars to finance a lavish live-action remake of the Pastoral Symphony. Computer generated imagery would be strictly forbidden, instead Tim would draw inspiration from the work of Busby Berkeley and Georges Méliès. Alber Elbaz would make the costumes and Lily Cole and Lindsey Wixon would play centaurs. And Phillip Glass could create an alternate score for the Criterion DVD release, just like he did with La Belle et la Bete. God that would be good.

Return to Oz is terrifying. When Dorothy (Faruzia Balk) returns to Kansas and tells her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em about her experiences with talking lions and flying monkeys they decide to send her to a mental hospital for electroshock therapy. Thankfully she manages to escape from the hospital and miraculously ends up back in Oz. Unfortunately, Oz has been destroyed by an evil witch who decapitated the most attractive female residents and interchanges their heads with her own. As a child I was obsessed with this part of the film and would habitually re-create it with my Barbie dolls. It's hard to pry the head off a Barbie doll, if only I had the terrifying new "Fashionista Swappin' Styles" Barbie, my life would have been so much easier!

Sandra Bernhard was my idol from age twelve onward. I first saw her in the Madonna documentary Truth or Dare and later in Issac Mizarahi's Unzipped. She was clearly the ideal BFF to have in 90's New York. I had never seen a woman who was so fearless and unbashedly eccentric, it was incredibly inspiring. It never occurred to me that you could be opinionated and political and also wear silver lamé miniskirts.

I haven't seen her perform in years but I saw her new show I Just Love Being Me, Don't You? last month and all my tween fangirl emotions came rushing back. When she opened her show with a cover of "Across 110th Street" I was sold. When Liza Minnelli and Rufus Wainwright made surprise appearances I just about died. And at some point she ripped off a ball gown to reveal a black spangly bodysuit, it was pretty major.

Important Jumpsuits of the Nineties

1. Missy Elliott's "The Rain" video (1997)
What could be more punk rock than wearing a giant inflatable PVC jumpsuit that makes you look morbidly obese? This just might be the most subversive fashion statement of the era.

2. Tori Amos' "Crucify" video (1992)
First and foremost, the fact that this song is nearly twenty years old is really mind-blowing. Tori's teal velvet (or is it velour?) jumpsuit looks just as good today as it did in '92.

3. PJ Harvey at the Glastonbury festival(1995)
This jumpsuit is totally wearing her but in a good way. And the eyeshadow is a nice touch.

4. Madonna's "Human Nature" video (1995)
I'm assuming that Madonna discovered Mary Gaitskill in the early nineties and this is what happend. Has anyone else noticed that she looks like she's writhing around in a giant IKEA shelving unit?

5. The Spice Girls' "Say You'll Be There" video (1996)
Even though she's totally upstaged by Ginger Spice (as always) Posh Spice had a pretty compelling Emma Peel moment in the "Say You'll Be There." video. And it's always fun to see her without all that bronzer.

5. Sonic Youth's "My Friend Goo" video (1990)
Kim Gordon's Anita Pallenberg-in-art-school style was one of the more interesting looks of the era. Even her curious styling decisions in this video are oddly endearing.

I'll try to chill out with the 90's stuff now. I was all about it until I read the Jenny Holzer twitter the other day and it said "nostalgia is the first sign of decay." So now can't hear an Ace of Base song without thinking about my own mortality. Thanks Jenny.

Gorgeous photographs by sixteen-year-old Ann He. Yeah, SIXTEEN. The fact that such a young woman is creating these images simultaneously amazes and annoys me (but mostly just amazes me). I think I am especially drawn to these because they remind me of the shoot I assisted for Chelsea magazine back home in California. Teenage girls in the woods with white flowing dresses, flower crowns and candles is the best subject matter.
