Return to Oz is terrifying. When Dorothy (Faruzia Balk) returns to Kansas and tells her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em about her experiences with talking lions and flying monkeys they decide to send her to a mental hospital for electroshock therapy. Thankfully she manages to escape from the hospital and miraculously ends up back in Oz. Unfortunately, Oz has been destroyed by an evil witch who decapitated the most attractive female residents and interchanges their heads with her own. As a child I was obsessed with this part of the film and would habitually re-create it with my Barbie dolls. It's hard to pry the head off a Barbie doll, if only I had the terrifying new "Fashionista Swappin' Styles" Barbie, my life would have been so much easier!

Fab post! I miss watching the movie.
one of my favorites, i still can't believe that there hasn't been an editorial inspired by this. COME ON PEOPLE (lula i'm talking to you).
Do you know, I've never actually seen that movie. It sounds really creepy. But really good! I'm going to rent it out.
I remember going "mummy, there's something wrong with wizard of Oz, it's gone all creepy."
I had thrilling nightmares about the heads for years after.
Also one of my favorites. I remember how excited I was just to find it on VHS.
This movie is a classic. I miss Faruiza, she was so good in this and all of the 90s!
She used to own this cool new age store here in L.A.
I remember thinking that the lunch-box tree was the coolest thing ever.
oh my god! Me and my sister used to watch this together, and everytime I would have nightmares. The whole switching heads thing freaked the shit outta me. And the shock-therapy scenes at the beginning? Damn, I gotta find this and watch it again.
Such a great film.
"Is that a chicken in there with you?!?"
I walked out of this movie as a kid, it was so freaking scary. I think it would even freak me out as an adult. Pan's Labyrinth gave me nightmares at the age of 28.
Oh my gosh! It's been so long since I watched this movie, but I vividly remember those heads...
one of the most underrated kids movies! i loved the shit out of this even though i was so scared of the beginning when she's escaping the hospital. also i read the whole oz series and was a huge nerd.
O awesome! They've been running this on DirecTV...as a first-time viewer, of course I was enraptured! I missed out on the beginning * : (
I loved the Wheelers and the mechanical man who's been waiting so long for Dorothy...I'm going to start looking to purchase this!!! SURREAL!!!
cool! I've never seen it, I just put it on my Netflix list and I'm getting it tomorrow!
Oh my God! I have vivid memories of this movie from my childhood and could never place it. So good.
I love this movie, when i was little the wheelers used to scare me so much!!! but aside from that the post (and all the other recent fairy tale posts) have induced some much needed nostalgia!!
omg i can't believe i've never seen this! i even read some of the oz books, i don't remember anything about head-swapping. it looks like the best movie ever. disembodied heads are my favorite.
Preach sister, preach! I watched this movie consistently, no matter how much it terrified me, I even had the children's book with the horrifying film stills. LYLAS.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. At some point there was a website that played the whole movie, but I can't find it anymore. Bummer. Guess I'll get it on DVD. Tick Tock is my favorite!
great post! i didn't remember this movie until about 6 years ago, and at the time I started recalling it I thought it was literally a figment of my dreams distorted in my subconscious from watching the original wizard of oz! Then I finally found it online, so I knew I had watched all that stuff as a kid, and not made it up in my head!
I will have to watch this! I have never heard of it! By the way, your blog header, and little footer kitty are hilarious and I absolutely love them.
