More Words of Wisdom

Being a creative person is 75% fun and 25% complete agony. And sometimes it's the other way around. Actually, most of the time it's the other way around so having a little guidance can be immensely helpful. I live by Sister Corita Kent's rules, especially #7, #8, and #10. Do yourself a favor and tape them above your workspace.

Also, I just found out that Aaron Rose made a documentary about Sister Corita called Become a Microscope. Can't wait to see it! On an unrelated note, I may be a little slow with the updates because I am going to France tomorrow! But hopefully I will find lots of lovely French things to blog about when I get back. I am so excited to eat my way through Ladurée!

CATBURGLAR

Watch out New York, there's a cat burglar on the loose! Apparently a woman wearing a cat mask recently held up a shoe store in the East Village getting away with a pathetic $86. That could buy a mere four cases of Fancy Feast, not exactly worth all the pussy footing around if you ask me.

Imitation of Life

Technicolor melodramas and cheesy L.A. imagery are two of my major weaknesses so I can't help but love Alex Prager's photographs. She recently did a short film with Bryce Dallas Howard called Despair, check it out here.

Printed Matter

I've never seen an issue of Palais in the flesh so I can't vouch for it's quality but I absolutely love these Dynasty-themed covers. I'd go for the Krystle one.

Hey Ladies

Despite how backwards our laws are, President Obama has declared that June is now LGBT pride month! I’ll take it.

In celebration of this glorious month I thought I’d share some of my favorite lesbian/bisexual fashion icons. It drives me crazy that lesbian style is practically synonymous with frumpiness. Not all gay women look like the Indigo Girls or Janet Reno; some of us even wear heels and dresses! However, there is no denying that there is distinctive look that has been cultivated by lesbians (and bisexuals, thank you Marlene Dietrich!) over the years. Gay women have been appropriating men’s clothing long before Annie Hall and the current “borrowed from the boys” trend. Not that I’m resentful of the BFTB thing, I love that I can find great blazers (without bust darts!) and brogues at high street stores. But I was never fully committed to that look anyway, leopard print and dresses are far too appealing. Although after looking at these photos I may have to start channeling Garbo & co. on a regular basis.

Top to bottom: Gia Carangi's Armani ad, Lissy Trullie, Jodie Foster, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Jett, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Greta Garbo, Edwige Belmore, Freja Beja, Gia again, Radclyffe Hall, Peaches, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Alla Nazimova, Jodie Foster, Anita Berber, Marlene Dietrich.

NOTE: I forgot to include Patricia Field and Bettina Koster! They have great style. As does Jil Sander, although she is closeted for some bizarre reason. And I also love Rachel Maddow's Buddy Holly glasses.

Oh, and Guy Trebay wrote an interesting article about lesbian fashion a few years ago, check it out here.

Miss Dahl

Behold! Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights, the much anticipated cookbook from the darling Sophie Dahl. The recipes are lovingly broken up by the seasons as well as meals (which is something I really appreciate) and the whole book is studded with gorgeous photos of food and the beautiful Sophie. There are also quite a few funny and charming stories from her childhood and modeling days so even if you're not handy in the kitchen it still makes for a good read.

Here's a littler snippet from the accompanying show which sadly only airs on BBC 2. Hopefully a channel in the States will pick it up so I can watch them in their entirety, I love her relaxed style and taste. Is that a Mayle top I spy?

Haunt Me

If you thought my hair post was creepy prepare to be completely and utterly terrified by this picture of Faye Dunaway! It's an ad for the Japanese department store Parco. The brilliant Eiko Ishioka was the art director and costume designer. That woman amazes me, check out her wikipedia entry. I also love this crazy costume that she made for Grace Jones recently. Eiko was also behind a television ad for Parco featuring Ms. Dunway eating a hard-boiled egg. Can't wait to have nightmares about that!

Does anyone remember....

Jalouse USA (2001-02)? I don't know how many issues there actually were but I think that I have most of them. I will post images in the coming weeks along with other highlights from my old magazine collection. I acquired a freakish amount of magazines during high school and my parents have been kind enough to let me store them at their house. I think there are somewhere between 800 and 1,000; do I qualify for Hoarders?

Diary of a Chambermaid

It's rare that I see someone else with my exact hairstyle. Aside from a few girls that I've spotted on the street, the last person that comes to mind is Drew Barrymore's character in Scream. So I was really excited to see Eva Herzigova rocking my 'do in the new issue of Vogue Italia. I'm digging the Luis Bunuel vibe as well.

Wallpaper of my Dreams

I recently encountered this amazing Sara Moon-esq wallpaper at Ric's Hair Salon in Arcata, California (where Megan and I grew up). What I would do for a roll of that stuff....
