Cherry Bomb

Say what you will but I totally loved The Runaways. Sure it has a few inevitable biopic cliches but it was so entertaining and visually satisfying that I didn't really care. As tempting as is it is to post a million pictures of Kirsten Stewart I thought that it would be more interesting to share a few of my favorite cinematic rock 'n roll heroines. Who are yours?

Top to bottom: Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Jem & the Holograms, Ghost World, The Rose, Times Square, Starstruck, Ladies & Gentleman, the Fabulous Stains, Smithereens.

I agree, the movie looked great and I loved hearing all the songs again and I was crazy for the fashion. But the script was mediocre. Or worse. And I had a feeling after that first scene that they'd left out (either omitting it from filming or editing it out) a rape story so as soon as I got home I Googled up Cherie Currie and confirmed that. I mean really...the movie was supposedly trying to show the sordidness and the abuse these girls dealt with but it left out something that was likely a contributing factor to Cherie's drug abuse. It annoys me when people do things half-assed. Tell the damn story! Anyway, I love all things Joan Jett so I was glad I saw it anyway.

Thumbs-up to all your other rock chick pix. (I've always looooved The Rose. Bette was so sex-ay!) No Sid and Nancy?

I read that they omitted the rape because they didn't want her to lose her innocence so early in the film. Completely stupid. I get what you're saying about the script (especially the scene where they write cherry bomb) but like I said, I looked past it. And I do think that they did a good job of capturing the teenage girl experience. Or rather, the BADASS teen girl experience. God it takes me back!

I've probably seen the Rose 30-40 times as crazy as that sounds. I've been obsessed with it since childhood. But I've never seen Sid and Nancy actually. I've always been a big sex pistols hater so I never really went there. Although nancy did look pretty amazing...

Oh man, I totally loved The Runaways too! All the other people I saw it with were getting all restless and rolly-eyed by the end, and I was SO into it haha. I mean, I guess I just generally expect a certain level of Hollywood bullsh*t when it comes to stuff like this, and I can accept it and just move past it.and then enjoy the crap out of it. Ah, it was just like candy, sweet 70's girl power caaannndddyyy.

Also, I thought it was funny that everyone was bashing Dakota's version of "Cherry Bomb" so hard, what with her over-pronunciation and all the cheesy shoulder shaking she does in the movie, but if you look up the Runaways' actual performance in Japan, she totally sings it EXACTLY the same as Curry did live. So. There. :n P

I've seen that clip of Cherie doing Cherry Bomb also and dakota totally nailed it. The fact that she is young and inexperienced just made it feel more authentic. You could tell that Cherie was posing and posturing and trying to figure out how to be a rock star.

PS I love that both of you were also awake at 2AM last night, sunday night insomnia is the best/worst!

Someone else knows Starstruck!

As for Times Square, I don't think "Your Daughter is One" get the recognition it deserves.

I thought The Runaways was pretty amazing. I'd been really worried about it (even doing lengthy blog posts about it last year), but I was pleasantly surprised with how good it was. Obviously disappointed that there wasn't more Lita, but I guess that provides me the room to write her story... I actually really want to go see The Runaways again...

Love Ghost World! I haven't seen that in forever, I need to watch it again. It's weird seeing how far Scarlett's career has come since then. And I'd like to see Valley of the Dolls, I'd heard of it but wasn't sure what it was about.
